A Report by CYS Global Remit Human Resource Management Unit
In today's world, food waste remains a significant global tragedy, with our methods of food production and consumption being the largest contributors to nature loss and greenhouse gas emissions.
In Singapore, food waste has become a substantial issue, growing by approximately 20% over the past decade. Globally, a staggering one-third of all food produced is wasted annually, amounting to a massive loss of valuable resources. Several factors contribute to food waste, notably hunger and food insecurity, along with economic losses. While millions of tons of food are wasted yearly, millions suffer from hunger worldwide.
Reducing food waste could address food insecurity by redistributing surplus food to those in need and mitigate economic losses. Billions of dollars are lost annually due to food waste at various stages of the supply chain.
In CYS Global Remit Office Facility Management Unit pantry campaign aims for a zero-food waste kitchen. To achieve this, CYS pantry team incorporates meal planning and grocery lists to prevent overbuying, creatively utilizes leftovers, composts food scraps, and opts for products with minimal or biodegradable packaging. Vegetable trimmings are repurposed to make soup stock, while stems are used in dumpling or patty fillings, adding value to ingredients that would otherwise be discarded.
Remaining breakfast items are repurposed for lunch, ensuring consumption before disposal. Our systematic approach not only reduces our environmental impact but also yields cost savings and promotes sustainability within our organization. CYS pantry team encourages mindfulness in food consumption among employees by monitoring leftovers and fostering a culture of taking only what can be finished.
Reducing food waste is a collective responsibility that demands action at individual, organizational, and societal levels. Through innovative strategies and a culture of sustainability, CYS can strive towards eliminating food waste and building a more equitable and environmentally conscious future. Let's all contribute to reducing food waste and preserving our landfills!
