World Suicide Prevention Day 2024: Take Action for Change

A Report by CYS Global Remit Human Resource Management Team

Every 40 seconds, the world loses a life to suicide, totalling over 700,000 each year. The repercussions ripple through families and communities, creating profound social, emotional, and economic impacts. On September 10, 2024, as we commemorate World Suicide Prevention Day, we call attention to the urgent need to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health and foster open conversations to prevent these tragedies.

Mental health struggles can often feel isolating, especially when thoughts of suicide emerge. It's crucial to remember that you are not alone. A multitude of support services stand ready to offer care and assistance when you need it the most.

Despite the availability of help, a recent survey found that only half of Singaporeans are aware of how to access suicide support services. This significant knowledge gap, compounded by stigma around seeking help—whether from professionals or loved ones—often deters individuals from reaching out.

Enter Project Hayat, a groundbreaking White Paper advocating for a cohesive national suicide prevention strategy. It calls for a public awareness campaign to promote early intervention and reduce stigma, enhanced suicide prevention education in schools, and increased support for educators. It further recommends involving those affected by suicide in policymaking and establishing a dedicated national office for suicide prevention. Although progress is being made, gaps in knowledge and confidence in providing support remain.

At CYS Global Remit, the mental well-being of every team member is our top priority. Our Human Resource Management Unit and Chief of Staff are always available for support and guidance. By staying engaged with our staff, we ensure that everyone feels supported in any mental health challenges they may face.

If you’re experiencing feelings of hopelessness or need assistance, please know that help is within reach. Contact support services through hotlines or online platforms. Your life is invaluable, and brighter days lie ahead.

Let us know if there are any further adjustments you'd like!
